Behind the Walls
A Practical Guide to Christian Prison Ministry from the Inside Out

3. Establish citation integrity protocols. Never allow quotation marks around any text that you have not personally verified as a verbatim quotation with a book on the shelf or by scrutinizing online sources with full bibliographic information. Attribute synthesized ideas without quotation marks. This single rule will protect your ministry from the most common failure mode of AI-generated theological content.
4. Train lay leaders to review AI-generated material. AI can produce a draft, but a theologically informed human must review it. Invest in training your elders, deacons, and mature laypeople to identify doctrinal errors, inappropriate applications, and unsupported claims in AI-generated text.
5. Share your resources. If you develop effective theological guidelines for AI-assisted Bible study preparation, share them with other churches and ministries. The body of Christ benefits when its members pool their intellectual and theological resources. Visit us at bautistashistoricos.com to access our guideline documents as starting points for your own.
Discussion Questions
1. The apostle Paul used the technologies of his day—Roman roads, Greek language, imperial mail—to advance the Gospel. How does AI fit within this pattern of technological adaptation? Are there meaningful differences between Paul’s use of Roman infrastructure and our use of artificial intelligence?
2. What are the greatest theological risks of using AI in ministry, and how can they be mitigated? Is it possible to eliminate these risks entirely, or must we accept some degree of ongoing vigilance?
3. Our citation integrity rule—quotation marks only for verified verbatim quotes—addresses a specific weakness of AI systems. What other weaknesses should churches be aware of when using AI for theological purposes?
4. How does the five-point structure (Contexto, Malas Noticias, Buenas Noticias, Aplicación, Conclusión) ensure that the Gospel remains central in every Bible study? Could a similar structural framework be applied to AI-assisted sermon preparation?
5. What does it mean to treat prisoners as capable of serious theology? How does this assumption differ from the approach of most prison ministries, and why does it matter for the spiritual formation of inmates?

Note
1 Note that an institution designated as a Centro de Detención Preventiva should be a category for pretrial detainees with flight risk, but in practice holds both pretrial and sentenced inmates, as is common with smaller regional facilities in Chile; thus, it would be better termed Centro para Detención y Prevención.
Appendix: Sample Catalog of AI-Assisted Prison Bible Studies and Sunday School Lessons
The following catalog documents the Bible studies that Valentín and I have prepared using AI assistance for the Bautistas Históricos prison ministry at CDP Casablanca and for the Sunday School program. Each study follows the five-point framework described above and was prepared using AI as a theological research assistant, with final editorial review by the teaching pastor. All studies are available for download at bautistashistoricos.com.
Prison Bible Studies (Estudios Bíblicos Carcelarios CDP)—AI-Assisted

Pastor Valentín Navarrete Urbina’s Sunday School Series—Doce Pruebas de un Cristiano Verdadero (Twelve Tests of a True Christian, 1 John)
All studies available at bautistashistoricos.com
Pastor Valentín’s series on 1 John explores Doce Pruebas de un Cristiano Verdadero—Twelve Tests of a True Christian—examining the marks of genuine saving faith as articulated by the Apostle John: walking in the light, sensitivity to sin, love for the brethren, walking as Christ walked, love as evidence of new life, rejection of worldliness, and perseverance in true doctrine. Estudio No. 4 in the series (“Andando como Cristo anduvo”) was also adapted for prison use as study no. 12 in the prison catalog above.
The remaining five studies in the Doce Pruebas series—covering the residue of 1 John 2:18 through chapter 5—are in preparation as of this writing and will be added to the catalog at bautistashistoricos.com as they are released.
